Keli at Nanstein Castle
In the dungeon of Nanstein -
Papa scared her with howls.
The castle is so old that the rock steps
have been worn down over time.
Smoke or ghosts - we don't recall
smoke at the castle ???
Leading away from the highest point
we could walk to.
Going towards the dungeons we encountered smoke or what looks like smoke - in the pictures - not where we could see it. No fires, no smoke that we could see.
Keli said she was scared when I said let's go into the dungeon. She said "I hear noises", I didn't hear anything...........

The Nanstein or Sickingen Castle was
built about the year 1160 by the
Emperor Barbarossa. In 1475 the
Knights Sickingen gained the castle by
marriage. The famous Knight Franz von
Sickingen (1481-1523) fortified the
castle in 1518, but fell in battle in 1523
against 3 powerful princes of the
Empire. From 1543 on, his sons and
grandsons rebuilt the battered castle,
until 1600 it was a magnificent palace.
Though the castle remained untouched
by the 30-year War, it was blown up in
1668 by the Palatinate Elector. The
renovated castle then fell into ultimate
ruin under the French in 1689. Since
1856, people interested in local history
and the Sickingen family have been
endeavoring to excavate and restore
the rubble-buried remains of the castle
of Nanstein, it ranks among the noblest
and most beautiful castle ruins in
Germany.

The castle as it
looks today. The
ball is next to the
entrance. The
star shows where
in summer it
serves as a stage
for performances
of the Landstuhl
Castle Plays. Just
above the ball
(inside the wall)
there is a
passage way to
the dungeons.
