Two pictures of the Dom,
a 500+ year old church
in the heart of Mainz.
Altstadt (Old Town)
Mainz is just behind the
Dom.
An old tower from the middle
ages or Roman times.
On a foot-bridge coming from the Dom - going to
the Rhine River, just two 1/2 blocks away.
Above - A small side trip to a place I visited 30+ years ago. A full restaurant above
and a Kegal Room below. Kegal is a German type of bowling...no finger holes in
the ball. Below a picture of the apartment (2nd floor) where we lived.
On the road to Mainz - There had been a lot of
fog that froze and turned everything white.
The Gutenburg Museum was closed
this day. It is across the square from
the Dom (church).
This picture is misleading - the
buildings are actually paintings on
some material showing what the
construction (behind) is going to look
like..
In Altstadt Mainz - I made a panorama
so you could see more of it - see
panorama above.
By the Hilton Hotel - The Rhine River
is just beyond the flags in the
background.
The main street going through Gonsenheim -a
suburb of Mainz. This picture faces away from a
church that "splits" the road. Shown on the right.
The girls getting in their
Christmas shopping in Mainz.
Crossing the bridge to the
Rhine River. Near the Hilton
At the Hilton on the Rhine
River.
Three pictures, making a panorama of the Rhine River - The bridge in the background goes to Mainz-Kastel and Wiesbaden. Going up the river to the left
will lead you to Cologne, Koblenz, and many castles along the way. You can get a satellite view by going to the city map of Mainz.
Zoom in and you can see the bridges above and the one we had to cross.
Our rental car - A VW Tour - it had a
navigation system which made getting
around real easy.
At the Sand Flora Housing - my apartment is on
the second floor. 30 years ago.
Windmill is called a pyramid,
small ones are powered by
candles.
In the Market Place (Marktplatz). The workers were
taking down the booths and decorations from the
Christmas Market. In February this place gets all
dressed up again for Fashnact or Fasching.. similar
to New Orleans Mardi Gras....
